Right Face tells the compelling story of how the American conservative movement in the two decades following World War II managed to move from obscurity to the center stage of national politics. When Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 defeated the conservative champion Robert Taft and won the Republican presidential nomination, many on the American right felt that they had become homeless within the established party-system. The brand of liberalism which permeated the nation's intellectual life had also become bipartisan political doctrine. The feeling of cultural and political ostracism triggered a quest for an independent conservative network of organizations, with the hope of either "taking back" the Republican Party or creating a viable alternative.

The first part of Right Face recounts the often bitter struggle to define the meaning of conservatism in modern America. Part two concerns the search for influential national outlets for conservative opinion, whereas part three focuses on the movement's actual plunge into electoral politics - not least on its well-planned takeover of the Republican Party machinery in 1964 and the resulting presidential nomination of Senator Barry Goldwater. An epilogue attempts to trace main currents in the evolution of American conservatism since the 1960s, as well as to assess the extent to which American conservatives have managed to create the "Counter-Establishment" they set out to create more than half a century ago. In a sense the conservatives actually set out on two different quests: One was for intellectual respectability. The other was for political power. As this study reveals, the two goals were not always compatible.

Based on extensive archival sources, Right Face provides an incisive analysis of the conservative movement and the forces that shaped it. With its blending of intellectual and organizational developments, it adds an important chapter to the history of American political culture in the 20th century.

Niels Bjerre-Poulsen, ph.d., is an associate professor in the Department of English at the Copenhagen Business School.

Pressen skrev

- Michael Bach Henriksen, JyllandsPosten

"While Bjerre-Poulsen is unafraid to evaluate his subject, he does not ... argue with it - a welcome sign of intellectual maturity. Like most of the younger historians ... who are now tilling the field of conservative history, Bjerre-Poulsen has sufficient detachment to treat his topic respectfully. This is a mighty step forward."
- George H. Nash, National Review

"Bjerre-Poulsen provides an excellent overview of the political emergence of American conservatism. ... Essential reading for anyone wishing to understand conservative politics and contemporary American."
- R. Heineman, Alfred University, CHOICE

"Niels Bjerre-Poulsen has provided a much-needed synthesis of American political conservatism from World War II until the Goldwater campaign of 1964, displacing David Reinhard's dated The Republican Right since 1945 (1983)...What the author sets out to do, he does well. Right Face is a valuable synthesis and should be well received by those eager to understand conservatism as a political force in American history."
- Gregory L. Schneider, Emporia State University, The Journal of American History

"Right Face is a thorough, scholarly, and engaging exploration of the efforts by a cast of varied conservatives who struggled to organize a movement in the United States in the 20 or so years following World War II. Niels Bjerre-Poulsen covers a great deal of ground in a compact and perceptive narrative."
- James T. Patterson, Professor of History, Brown University

Right Face is the perfect companion to George Nash's classic, The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America. What Nash did for the history of conservatism as an intellectual movement, Bjerre-Poulsen has done for political conservatism, supplying a long-overdue taxonomy of groups and movements and suggesting both the range of the movement and exposing its evolving center. Right Face is an indispensible contribution to the new historiography of American conservatism."
- Ted V. McAllister, Edward L. Gaylord Professor of Public Policy, Pepperdine University

"Denne bok är ett viktigt bidrag till förståelsen av det kalla krigets inverkan på det inrikespolitiska klimatet i USA och den politiska mittens förflyttning till höger som ägde rum under slutet av 1970-talet."
- Martin Öhman, Historisk Tidskrift, Sverige
