From the beginning of the chapter:
For the organizers of the "Draft Goldwater Committee", January 3, 1964, was a milestone. Senator Goldwater finally announced his candidacy. It was also, however, a day of great disappointment. Not a single one of the organizers, who for almost three years had worked to secure Goldwater the nomination, was now invited to join the inner-circle of his campaign team.
The members of Draft Goldwater Committee still had the organization that the candidate needed, and had at least hoped that they could become a citizens' committee, but the senator was quick to announce that the entire operation was being taken over by the Goldwater for President Committee. There was an understandable resentment about the way in which the entire organizational network which White and his Committee had established was simply taken over by what would become known as the senator's "Arizona Mafia". The whole operation would be headed by the senator's personal friend Denison Kitchel.
