In her doctoral dissertation from the University of Copenhagen, Nina
Grønnum introduces and discusses 12 articles dealing with different aspects
of Danish intonation.
The book summarizes what has earlier been written and discussed concerning
the subject, mainly on a non-empirical level, and from this point she moves
on to defining an empirical method (material, speech, acoustic analysis);
such as different types of sentences and intonation. After the
introduction, a discussion of the content of the 12 articles follows: the
theoretical implications of a number of analyses of regional language and
the methods and results of this research are related to earlier and more
recent scientific results regarding intonation in a number of other
languages. Lastly, the author suggests a structure of Danish intonation - a
structure which is said to constitute a model concept, if not a theory of
intonation as such.
The book is lavishly illustrated and features a detailed bibliography on
the subject.
