Enghoff, Inge Bødker Hunting, fishing and animal husbandry at The Farm beneath the Sand, Western Greenland
An archaeozoological analysis of a Norse farm in the Western Settlement
This book presents an analysis of a large and well-preserved sample of animal bones, which was excavatd on "The Farm beneath the Sand" in the Norse Western Settlement in Greenland. A wide range (at least 36 species) of fish, birds and mammals is represented in the material, from tiny capelin over geese and sheep to huge baleen whales. The analysis covers the entire period of accupation of the farm, from ca. AD 1000-1400. It illustrates how the Norsemen exploited the wild fauna but also kept domestic animals, and how the latter adapted to living in the new environment.
