The idea behind this selection of essays, written over a couple of decades, is to show how, as Susan Bassnett has suggested, literary studies and translation studies may be combined in various ways.

The essays range from translation theory to philological approaches to translation, studies of ideology and of motifs, studies in literary influence, and an exploration of what may happen when a written narrative is turned into a film.

Most of the material has been published before, but some of the essays have been changed or expanded. However, no attempt has been made to modernize texts from the 1980´s and 1990´s systematically.

Viggo Hjørnager Pedersen (b. 1941), is Ph.D., Dr. Phil., and Associate professor at the University of Copenhagen (English). He has published a number of books and articles on translation studies and literature.
