Kalevala er Finlands svar på de islandske sagaer og de homeriske digte.

I dette store heltedigt skildres kampen mellem to lande eller landskaber: Kalevala og Pohjola. Hovedpersonerne er 'Gamle, vise Väinämöinen', 'Mestersmeden Ilmarinen' og 'Muntert viltre Lemminkäinen'.

Kalevala er det finske national-epos. Her forløses den finske 'folkesjæl' kunstnerisk gennem skildringer af magi og natur.

Kalevala består af 50 sange, versfortællinger som blev indsamlet blandt den finske almue. De blev nedskrevet efter mundtlig tradition og udgivet i sin nuværende form i 1849 af Elias Lönnrot.

Kalevala consists of 50 songs, narratives in verse that were gathered among the Finnish peasants. They were written down from the oral tradition and published in their present form in 1849 by Elias Lönnrot.
