"Overall, this impressive volume is an important contribution
to our knowledge of polar bear ecology and distribution.
It is well-written and edited and free of jargon, and the printing and reproduction quality are excellent. I found no errors of fact or omissions of important material. The book is well documented, with 93 references (English, Danish, and Greenlandic) on a variety of relevant subjects, including
polar bear ecology and status, use of local knowledge in research and management, Greenlandic culture and harvesting
techniques, and climate change. There are a total of 119 tables and 37 figures (charts and maps) in addition to a number of high-quality colour photos of bears, hunting techniques, local landscapes and communities, prey items (e.g., pagophilic seals, walruses) and successful predation events.
Born et al. provide a detailed and informative account of the distribution, biology, and harvesting of polar bears and the effects of recent climate changes on the species and the subsistence hunt. I highly recommend this book for researchers and managers involved with polar bear conservation.
The information contained here is also of value to many other interested parties and is not limited to those with an interest in polar bears or Inuit harvesting. For example, the reports on climate change observations are of general interest and valuable both to researchers in a wide range of disciplines and to laypersons." - Jeff W. Higdon, Arctic, Vol. 64, Sept. 2011.
"In conclusion, this is an important book. It provided a
significant opportunity for the hunters themselves to contribute
to ongoing discussions about polar bear conservation.
In the process, a wealth of well-documented
information was obtained, mapped, and preserved for
future use. Importantly, it also clearly illustrated some of
both the strengths and the clear limitations of local ecological
knowledge, thus underlining that our best overall
understanding of arctic animals will be obtained when both
traditional and scientific approaches supplement each
other." - Ian Stirling, Polar Biology 35, 2011.
"Polar bears is volume 351 in the Meddelelser om Grønland (Monographs
on Greenland) series, which was established in 1878. This
volume builds on the Greenlandic and Danish tradition of sound
documentation in all fields of Arctic research. Too often,
inclusion of traditional ecological knowledge in management
is hampered by anecdotal observations and a lack of thorough
documentation. As a contribution to polar bear management,
this is a first-rate example of how important documenting
traditional ecological knowledge can be. ...
More than anything else, this book provides a solid template
on how to conduct and present traditional ecological knowledge
surveys. Recommendations on how to improve upon such
surveys are most helpful. The text is well referenced and the
literature cited includes several lesser known reports, which
makes the reference list a valuable resource. The volume is
a valuable addition to the polar bear literature." - Andrew E. Derocher, Journal of Polar Record, Volume 49 - 2013.
